George Coelho
Bass guitar
George was born in London and spent his early days chasing planes, boats and trains. He later took up the bass guitar in 1968, fell under the spell of the late, great John Entwistle (of The Who) and has continued John's tradition of frustrating fellow band members with the combination of massive kit, too much volume and lots of treble.
He played with the acclaimed fusion band, Snap, led by the Lord Brothers, in the Washington, D.C area during the early Seventies, opening for such acts as Brownsville Station and Slade. Later he gigged with his brother’s rock band, Blue Steel and spent some time as a roadie for Irish Blues legend Rory Gallagher. George had the good sense to stay at university and later joined the business world, financing movies and airlines in LA. Later he moved to Silicon Valley and spent almost a decade with Intel.
After studying with Bassist Jeff Berlin in Florida, he decided to chuck it all in and moved back to Europe to moonlight as a Venture Capitalist. He later joined Farnham, Surrey-based band, The Execs and later local band, One Bar Too Far. Following that he joined newly constituted jazz-rock band Red Zone Alley led by well-known vocalist Debbie Quaile. In the summer of 2007, he answered an ad in Corriere Del Ticino and was privileged to join storied Lugano band, The New Dream.
Nowadays he lives in London and Switzerland and between gigs with the band, hikes in the mountains, skis, rallies classic cars, shoots and generally tries to do some VC work during the interludes. Influences include, John Entwistle, James Jamerson Stanley Clarke, Jeff Berlin, Ray Brown and Ron Carter.
George prefers to listen to Jazz, Motown or vocalists such as Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, Jewel, Sheryl Crow and Joss Stone. He plays Status basses through Ashdown amplification.
